EU Anti-Money Laundering Directives and Regulation (EU) 2024/1624; in the Netherlands the Wet ter voorkoming van witwassen en financieren van terrorisme (Wwft)

What it is

The Wwft implements EU anti-money-laundering law for banks, payment and crypto providers, trust offices, accountants, lawyers, notaries, real-estate agents and traders in high-value goods. The new EU AML Regulation will apply directly from July 2027, with a new EU authority (AMLA) supervising the riskiest cross-border entities.

This applies to you if

  • You are a financial, payment, crypto, trust or professional-services provider
  • You accept large cash payments or trade in high-value goods
  • You onboard customers for a regulated client and must meet their KYC standards

What it asks of you

  1. Risk-based customer due diligence, including beneficial owners and politically exposed persons
  2. Ongoing transaction monitoring and sanctions screening
  3. Reporting of unusual transactions to FIU-Nederland
  4. Record keeping, training and an appointed compliance function

What it costs to ignore

Fines up to EUR 5 million or 10% of turnover, licence consequences, and criminal liability for serious failures.
